1957: Buddy Holly and the Crickets released 'That'll Be The Day', their debut record. It topped the UK chart and made it to the No.3 spot in the US chart. The inspiration for the name came from a John Wayne film called The Searchers, where Wayne frequently-used, world-weary catchphrase, "that'll be the day". It was also the first song that was recorded by The Quarrymen, the skiffle group that subsequently became The Beatles.
1963: The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan by Bob Dylan was released by Columbia in the USA. The album Established Dylan as a leader in the singer and songwriter genre and a supposed spokesman for the youth-orientated protest movement. The album reached the No.22 spot in the US charts and topped the UK charts. It showcased Dylan's songwriting talent for the first time and propelled him to national and international fame.

1977: 'God Save The Queen' by Sex Pistols was released in the UK. The single was banned by TV and radio and high street shops and pressing plant workers refused to handle the record. It eventually sold approximately 200,000 copies in only one week and peaked at the No.2 spot on the UK charts. There have been persistent rumors, yet they were never confirmed or denied, that the song was actually the biggest-selling single in the UK at the time, and the British Phonographic Industry conspired to keep it off the top of the chart.
1983: The Smiths topped the UK independent chart with their debut single 'Hand In Glove.' They recorded the song after their manager Joe Moss paid £250 for a one-day recording session at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England.

1989: Cliff Richard released 'The Best Of Me', his 100th single. It became Richard's 26th Top 3 UK hit.

1994: Eagles played their first show in 14 years when they performed in Burbank, California. The two-and-a-half-hour show ended with two encores, closing with 'Desperado'.
