Today: June 26.

 

1961: Gary U.S. Bonds started a two-week run at the top of the US charts with 'Quarter To Three', which also reached the No.7 spot in the UK. Before he recorded this, it was an instrumental by The Church Street Five by the name of 'A Night With Daddy G.' The manager of Bonds added lyrics to the instrumental and told him to record it. The song is often covered by Bruce Springsteen who is known to be a big fan. In 1981, Springsteen produced a successful comeback album for Bonds.

1965: The Byrds topped the US singles chart with their own version to the song 'Mr Tambourine Man' by Bob Dylan.

 

1972: During sessions at Olympic Studios, London, England, David Bowie recorded the song 'John, I'm Only Dancing'. Mick Ronson plaeyd the lead guitar and Lou Reed played the rhythm guitar. The song became a hit single in the UK in September of that year, but was not released in the US, because RCA Records judged it too be too risqué. The original video which was directed by Mick Rock, features androgynous dancers from Lindsay Kemp's mime troupe. However, it was banned by British music show Top Of The Pops.

 

1974: Cher divorced Sonny Bono after 10 years of marriage. Only four days after, she married guitarist Gregg Allman, but the two split only 10 days later after. They got back together and then split again. Cher and Allman did stay married for 3 years, and have a song together, Elijah Blue Allman.

1988: Bros topped the UK singles chart with the song 'I Owe You Nothing'. It was their only No.1 hit.

1993: Gabrielle started a three-week run at the top of the UK singles chart with the song 'Dreams'. The single entered the British chart at the No.2 spot which was the highest chart entry for a debut act.

1993: Jamiroquai started a three-week run at the top of the UK album chart with 'Emergency On Planet Earth'.
