Today: June 17.

 

1965: While they were working at Abbey Road studios in London, The Beatles completed a new song by Paul McCartney called 'Yesterday', with the overdubbing of an additional vocal track by McCartney and a string quartet. The band members also recorded ‘Act Naturally’ for Ringo's vocal contribution on the ‘Help!’ album and also the song ‘Wait’, in only four takes. The song ‘Wait’ was not be included on the ‘Help!’ album, but was added eventually on the following album, Rubber Soul.

1971: Carole King topped the US album chart with ‘Tapestry’ for the first of 15 consecutive weeks. The album contains the songs: ‘I Feel the Earth Move’, ‘It's Too Late’, ‘You've Got a Friend’ and ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’’.

1972: Don McLean had his first UK No.1 single with 'Vincent.' a song that was written about the 19th century artist Vincent Van Gogh. It is played day after day at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

1973: Dolly Parton recorded the song 'I Will Always Love You' in RCA's Studio "B" in Nashville. It was written for her one-time partner and mentor, Porter Wagoner, (the two were splitting professionally at the time). The song became later on a worldwide hit for Whitney Houston.

1976: Blondie released 'X Offender', the band's debut single . It was written by Gary Valentine and Debbie Harry with the title of the song being originally 'Sex Offender'. The song tells the story of a 18-year-old boy that is arrested for having sex with his younger girlfriend. Debbie Harry decided to change the lyrics so that the song would be about a prostitute that was attracted to the police officer that had arrested her. Private Stock, the band’s label insisted that the single will be changed to 'X Offender', because they felt very nervous about the original title.

1979: Anita Ward topped the UK singles chart with the song 'Ring My Bell'. It was the only hit for the gospel singer from Memphis, making her a One Hit Wonder.

 

2012: Bruce Springsteen played his longest show of 3 hours and 48 minutes which took place at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. The concert included no less than 32 songs. This shows surpassed the previously longest show of 3 hours and 43 minutes that took place at the Nassau Coliseum, Long Island, New York on December 31, 1980.
