Today: June 16.

 

1962: The Konrads (featuring Dave Jay which later became David Bowie) made their live debut, as they performed at Bromley Technical School in Kent, England.

 

1965: Bob Dylan recorded the song 'Like A Rolling Stone' at Columbia Recording Studios in New York City. Session musicians included Al Koope and Mike Bloomfield, whose Hammond organ on 'Like A Rolling Stone' became one of rock's most recognizable sounds.

1967: Pink Floyd released 'See Emily Play', their second single, which was written by Syd Barrett. The slide guitar work on the song was done by Syd Barrett using a plastic ruler.

1972: David Bowie released The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, his fifth studio album. It is a concept album that tells the story of a fictional bisexual alien rock star by the name of Ziggy Stardust. The album reached the No.5 spot in the UK and the No.75 spot in the US and is considered as one of the greatest albums of all time.

 

1977: Kenny Rogers topped the UK singles chart with 'Lucille'. It was Rogers' first of two UK No.1 hits.

1979: Electric Light Orchestra started a five-week run at the top of the UK album chart with 'Discovery', the band's first No.1 LP. It features the tracks 'Don't Bring Me Down', 'Shine A Little Love' and 'The Diary Of Horace Wimp'.

1982: James Honeyman-Scott who was guitarist for The Pretenders, died following sustained cocaine and heroin addiction.

1984: Frankie Goes To Hollywood scored their second UK No.1 hit with the single 'Two Tribes.' The song stayed at the top of the chart for nine weeks, which made Frankie Goes To Hollywood the first band that had their first two singles go to the top of the UK chart. During this run, the band's previous single 'Relax' climbed back up the charts to the No.2 spot.

 

1990: Roxette started a two week run at the top of the US singles chart with the song 'It Must Have Been Love', which is featured in the film 'Pretty Woman'. The song became the Roxette's third US No.1 and also reached the No.3 spot in the UK.

1996: Metallica topped the UK album charts with their album 'Load'. The album showed more of a hard rock side of the band than the their typical thrash metal style, which alienated much of the Metallica's fan base. The album sold 680,000 units in the first week, which made it the biggest opening week for Metallica as well as the biggest debut of 1996. Load was certified 5× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling five million copies in the US.
