Today: June 1.

 

1961: Elvis Presley topped the UK singles chart with 'Surrender', Presley's eighth UK No.1 hit. It was based on the 1911 Italian song, 'Return To Sorrento.'

 

1963: Lesley Gore started a two week run at the top of the US singles chart with the song 'It's My Party' that was produced by Quincy Jones. It also reached the No.9 spot in the UK. Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin topped the UK chart with their version of the song in 1981.

 

1967: David Bowie released his self titled debut studio album. Two singles were released from this album: 'The Laughing Gnome' and 'Rubber Band'.

 

1968: Simon and Garfunkel topped the US singles chart with 'Mrs Robinson'. The song features in the film 'The Graduate' with Dustin Hoffman and Ann Bancroft, and earned the two musicians a Grammy Award in 1969 for Record of the Year.

1975: The Rolling Stones kicked off their biggest ever US tour at Louisiana State University. The tour included 45 shows in 26 cities. Guitarist Ronnie Wood joined the band on this tour for the first time. He replaced Mick Taylor.

1985: Prince & The Revolution started a three-week run at the top of the US album chart with Around The World In A Day.

 

2013: Vampire Weekend topped the US album charts with 'Modern Vampires of the City'. Their sophomore album 'Contra' also debuted at the top of the chart in 2010. This made it the first time an independent rock band had topped the chart with two consecutive releases. 'Modern Vampires of the City' album also shattered the previous record for first week vinyl sales, selling approximately 10,000 units.
