This Day in Music History: January 27January 27, 2017

We cover all sorts of news, facts and historical and interesting facts that happened on this day in music history.

Today: January 27.

1956: RCA Records released 'Heartbreak Hotel' by Elvis Presley. RCA Records had just purchased Presley's contract from Sun Records for $35,000. The song sold 300,000 copies in the first week and overall sold more than a million. It gave Elvis his first Gold record.

1962: The Beatles performed at Aintree Institute in Aintree, Liverpool. The band had played in this venue many times before, but this was their last performance here because Brian Epstein became infuriated when the promoter paid the bands' fee (£15 pounds) with handfuls of loose change. Brian Epstein saw this act as an insult to the band, and made sure that they never played for that specific promoter (Brian Kelly) ever again.

1971: David Bowie arrived in the US for the very first time. Bowie couldn't play live because of work permit restrictions, but he did attract publicity when he wore a dress at a promotion event.

1973: Stevie Wonder scored his second No.1 single in the US with 'Superstition', taken from his album 'Talking Book.' Jeff Beck created the original drum beat while in the studio with Stevie Wonder. After he wrote the song, Stevie Wonder offered it to Beck to record, but at the insistence of Berry Gordy, Wonder himself recorded it first. Instead, Beck was offered 'Cause We've Ended As Lovers', which he recorded on his 'Blow by Blow' album in 1975.
