1965: The Beatles topped the UK singles chart with 'Ticket To Ride', which features in the film Help! The song was the band's seventh UK No.1.

1966: 'Wild Thing' by The Troggs, was released in the U.S. on both the Atco and Fontana labels. The song reached the No.1. spot and was also a big influence on garage rock and punk rock.

1972: Deep Purple scored their second UK No.1 album with Machine Head. The album features the songs 'Smoke on the Water' and 'Highway Star' and had as a major influence in the early development of the heavy metal music genre. This was also the band's most successful album.

1977: The Jam released 'In The City', the band's first single , which peaked at No. 40 in the UK charts. The English punk rock/New Wave/mod revival formed in Woking, Surrey, scored 17 other Top 40 hits including 4 UK No.1 hits.

 

1989: Madonna started a three week run at the top of the US singles chart with 'Like A Prayer', her seventh US No.1 which also topped the UK chart.

1991: Dave Matthews Band played their first ever-live concert, when they performed at The Earth Day festival in Charlottesville, Virginia.

2001: Destiny's Child topped the UK singles chart with 'Survivor', the band's second No.1 hit. They were the first US female band that had more than one UK No.1 hit. The song won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Group.

 

2007: Beyonce & Shakira topped the UK singles chart with 'Beautiful Liar'. The song won the Most Earth-Shattering Collaboration award at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards and also the Ivor Novello Award, for for Best-Selling British Song.
