The Who are an English rock band that was formed in 1964 in London, England. The classic line-up of the band consisted of Roger Daltrey (lead vocals), Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar), John Entwistle (bass) and Keith Moon (drums).
The Who are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century. They sold more than 100 million records all over the world and hold a reputation for their studio work and live concerts.
The Who had some major contributions to rock music, which include the development of the Marshall stack, large PA systems, the use of the synthesizer, playing styles, feedback and power chord guitar technique, and also the development of the rock opera.
Before they were known as The Who, the band were known as The Detours, and later on The High Numbers. They started out as a cover band and performed American R&B songs.
Another interesting fact about The Who, is that they played at Woodstock, but actually hated it. Band member John Entwistle said that it was probably the worst-ever festival experience the band has ever had.
