The Verve were an English rock band that was formed in 1990 in Wigan. The band consisted of Richard Ashcroft (lead vocals)Nick McCabe (guitar)Simon Jones (bass) and Peter Salisbury (drums)Simon Tong (guitar and keyboard) later joined the band as well.

One of the band's most successful songs is "Bitter Sweet Symphony" which reached the No.2 spot on the UK chart and the No.12 spot on the US chart. Richard Ashcroft wrote the lyrics to the song as a somber look at the ennui of everyday life: "You're a slave to money, then you die."

"Bitter Sweet Symphony" was the only hit for The Verve. In 1998, The Verve won two Brit and in 1999, the song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.

The Verve broke up in 1999, but reformed in 2007, releasing their fourth studio album, Forth.
