The Ultimate List of Music Myths and Urban Legends

The Ultimate List of Music Myths and Urban LegendsJanuary 27, 2018

Hearing new fun facts about your favorite artists can be a cool way to gain insight about what goes on behind the music! Some artists are candid about what goes on outside of the recording booth, but others like to maintain their privacy. Learning information about artists who like to keep things private can be very exciting, but it's important to make sure that the information you're getting is valid! Many music myths and legends get passed around on sites like Twitter and Facebook, and here are ten of the most popular music myths that have been thrown around!

1. Avril Lavigne - Dead & Replaced

Celebrity death rumors aren't uncommon by any means. Seriously, at least once a month, the internet will go up in panic because of a Betty White death rumor. However, what makes this one death rumor interesting is that there was a replacement after the death! Starting on a Portuguese language blog in 2012, the myth at hand was that Avril Lavigne died in 2003 and had been replaced by a girl named Melissa Vandella. According to the myth, Avril hung herself before the making of her second album and she had been replaced by someone who was identical to her by her record label to keep her success going.

2. Elvis Presley - Alive?

Now, unlike Avril Lavigne, we know for sure that Elvis had passed away on August 16th, 1977. However, since then, a number of sightings have been reported. The first of the sightings began at an airport in Tennessee, and another at Elvis' 82nd birthday party. One of the most interesting sightings was the airport scene in the 1990 Christmas classic 'Home Alone'. While Kevin's mother, Kate, is trying to get a flight to find her son, a man with a striking resemblance to Elvis is standing behind her - some have speculated that this may in fact be Elvis!

3. Paul McCartney - Dead & Replaced

Similar to the Avril Lavigne myth, this one in particular derived from a car accident that Paul McCartney had gotten into in January of 1967. Fortunately, McCartney had survived the incident, but rumors soon began to circulate that he had actually died in the accident and been replaced by a look-a-like.

4. Ozzy Osbourne - Right Off The Bat

This myth is actually one of the few that has been confirmed to be true! One thing that you'll frequently hear about Ozzy is that he had bitten the head off of a bat on stage, and it turns out that is exactly what happened! What you may not know about the infamous incident is that he had been under the assumption that the bat was plastic when he did it, but quickly realized that it was a live bat.

5. Lady Gaga - Hermaphrodite?

An international superstar and pop icon, Lady Gaga has been known for her outrageous costumes, vibrant performances, and dazzling discography. However, a myth had begun to circulate a few years back that she was a hermaphrodite, meaning that she had both male and female genitalia. This begun after she appeared to possess male sex organs after stepping off of a motorcycle, but it had been eventually revealed that it was a prop from one of her shows.

6. Katy Perry - A Former Missing Child Star?

Katy Perry, one of the most successful artists in pop music once had a very different image than the one we have grown to love. She had been a Contemporary Christian Pop singer under her birth name, Katy Hudson. However, a myth started by Youtuber Dave Johnson was that Katy Perry was actually 90's child star JonBenét Ramsey, who had been murdered at age 6 with no conclusive evidence about who was responsible. In all honesty, the insanity of the myth itself aside, the two don't share much resemblance.

7. Beyoncé - Faked Her Own Pregnancy?

After Beyoncé had announced her pregnancy in 2011, it didn't take long for skeptics to give their input about the authenticity of her claim. During the Australian talk show "Sunday Night", Beyoncé had gone to sit down and her stomach seemed to fold in a way that many felt would be impossible for a woman who was pregnant. It also didn't help that there were no photographs or videos of Beyoncé having her child, nor was anyone allowed to be in the building when it was happening. Luckily, Beyoncé herself had dismissed this myth, claiming that it was one of the most ridiculous rumors she had ever heard about herself.

8. Britney Spears - Cloned?

Back in the early 2000's, Britney and then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake were in the spotlight of Hollywood. In 2001, two radio DJs, Keith Kramer and Tony Longo, had reported on their station that Britney had died in a car accident, and that Justin was in a coma. These rumors sent fans into a frenzy, and the two DJs were fired after the station had learned about the rumor they started. It didn't take long for a myth to start circulating about America's sweetheart. The myth at hand was that Jive, Britney's former record label, had created a clone of her after this supposed car accident similar to the Avril and Paul rumors.

9. Jennifer Lopez - Insurance Policy On Her Behind?

Jennifer Lopez is known for her talent as an artist, an actress, and her beauty. One of the biggest urban legends to come out about the star is that she had actually insured her butt, and has been reported among many different sources for many years. However, Miss Jenny from the Block herself reconfirmed this ongoing rumor during a late night interview, saying that it was completely untrue.

10. Stevie Wonder - Perfect Vision?

Stevie Wonder, one of the most commercially successful artists in history, also happens to be blind. However, like most things that are out of the ordinary in the music scene, it has been questioned for several years. Several instances, like catching a falling microphone, or being able to take a perfect picture, have raised a lot of questions. How would he be able to do this? Well, a motive for this is very unclear, and the whole idea is incredibly far-fetched.

While only one of these has been confirmed to be true (That poor bat!), many of these myths that have circulated are incredibly unrealistic and out of this world. However, it is certainly thrilling to give them even the slightest consideration that they may be true. What would you do if you found out that your favorite music artist had actually been a clone created by their record label, or that a music artist you loved that had passed away may be at your local supermarket, shopping around just like any other day?
