The Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band that was formed in 1988 in Chicago, Illinois.
Billy Corgan and James Iha formed the band in 1988 when the two met at a used record shop where Billy Corgan worked. D'arcy joined the band after she met Corgan outside a bar, getting into an argument over the band The Dan Reed Network.
The Smashing Pumpkins first began playing as a three-piece with a drum machine, until Jimmy Chamberlin (drums) was found through a classified ad and joind the band.
The Smashing Pumpkins have a diverse, densely layered, and guitar-heavy sound, containing in their music elements of heavy metal, dream pop, gothic rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, shoegazing, and electronica. Billy Corgan is the band's primary songwriter and his musical ambitions and cathartic lyrics have shaped the band's albums and songs.
The band broke into the mainstream with their 1993 album, Siamese Dream. The band built an audience when they toured extensively. The band's 1995 double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart.
The Smashing Pumpkins sold 30 million albums all over the world, and were one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands of the 1990s.
