Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about American girl group, The Ronettes.
Enjoy!
The Ronettes were an American girl group that was formed in 1957 in New York City, and consisted of Veronica Bennett (lead singer), Estelle Bennett, and Nedra Talley.
Some of the group's most famous songs are "Baby, I Love You", "(The Best Part of) Breakin' Up", "Walking in the Rain" and "Be My Baby". All these songs charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song 'Be My Baby' was the first song by the group that Phil Spector produced and released on his label, Philles Records. It exemplified Phil Spector's "wall of sound" production technique, where he layered a lot of instruments and used echo effects.
Veronica Bennett was the only Ronette that sung in this song. Phil Spector rehearsed her for weeks and had her do 42 takes before he got the sound he wanted. Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys) said that the choruses of the song blew him away, and that the strings are are the melody of love.
In 1965, their song "Walking in the Rain" won a Grammy Award and in 1999, the song "Be My Baby" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2004, The Ronettes were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and in 2007, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Rolling Stone magazine ranked the group's album, Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica, at the No.422 spot on its list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. They were also the only girl group that toured with the Beatles.
