Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about English rock band, The Cure.
Enjoy!
The Cure are an English rock band that was formed in 1976 in Crawley, West Sussex. They have undergone several line-up changes over the years, with Robert Smith (vocals, guitar, songwriter) being the only constant member in the band.
Our interesting fact of the day is about the origin of the band's name, which is quite interesting. The Cure decided to choose their band name using a technique that David Bowie sometimes used in order to compose lyrics. Bowie it seems, was one of the band's heroes.
The technique was to cut up phrases and selecting one randomly. The one that the band members pulled out of a hat was "Easy Cure", which was part of a lyric to a song they were working on.
However, Robert Smith later convinced the other band members to change the name to "The Cure", because it sounded more punk, and so the band's name was born.
Their musical style placed them as part of the post-punk and New Wave movements that had sprung up in the wake of the punk rock revolution in the UK. During the early 1980s, the The Cure's tormented and dark music, with Robert Smith's stage look, was a staple of the emerging style of music known as gothic rock.
The Cure have sold approximately 27 million records as of 2004 and have released 13 studio albums, 10 EPs, and more than 30 singles to this day.

The song "Lovesong" by The Cure was written by Robert Smith, singer of the band. He wrote this song as a wedding present for his fiancée, Mary Poole, shortly before the two got married.
The lyrics to the song were inspired by the constant touring that Smith had to go through with The Cure. Smith wanted his wife to know that no matter how much he had to travel and perform, he would always love her.
"Lovesong" was by far the biggest hit for the band in the US, reaching the No.2 spot on the chart.

The song "Lullaby" by The Cure is based on a recurring nightmare that lead singer Robert Smith had as a child, a dream where he was eaten by a giant spider. According to Smith, the song "Lullaby" is about the fear of sleep.
The music video to the song was inspired by David Lynch's debut horror movie Eraserhead from 1977. The music video itself won the Brit Award in 1990.
The song "Lullaby" had The Cure's best chart placing in the UK at #5.
