The Band was a Canadian-American rock group that consisted of Rick Danko (bass guitar, vocals), Richard Manuel (keyboards, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboards, saxophone), Levon Helm (drums, vocals) and Robbie Robertson (guitar, vocals).
Here are a few interesting facts about The Band:
1. They were first playing clubs as The Hawks, when Bob Dylan asked them to be his backup band on his first electric tour. They were often booed by fans and audiences who felt that Dylan had sold out his folk fans.
2. The Band recorded demos for their first album, Music From Big Pink, in the basement of a big pink house in upstate New York that they rented.
3. The Band are a huge influence on Eric Clapton, who was in the band Cream when Music From Big Pink came out.
4. The Band recorded their second album, The Band, at Sammy Davis Jr.'s house, which they had rented as well.
In 1989, The Band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in and in 1994 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked The Band at the No.50 spot on its list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. In 2008, The Band received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2014, they were inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame.
