T. Rex were an English rock band that was formed in London in 1967 by singer, songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan. The initiall name of the band was was Tyrannosaurus Rex and they released four psychedelic folk albums under this name.
In 1969, Marc Bolan started shifting from the early acoustic sound of the band to a more electric one, and one year later in 1970, he decided to shorten the band's name to T. Rex.
That same year of 1970, T. Rex released the single "Ride a White Swan" and soon they achieved commercial success as part of the glam rock scene that started to emerge.
T. Rex were so popular in the early 1970s back home in England, that Marc Bolan was awarded his own record label, called T. Rex Wax Co. of which the first release was the hit singele "Telegram Sam" on January 21, 1972.
Drummer, Bill Legend, is the only surviving member of the band's best known line-up (1971-1974). Marc Bolan died on September 16, 1977 in a car crash, bassist Steve Currie died in a car accident as well on April 28, 1981, and percussionist Mickey Finn died from liver and kidney problems on January 11, 2003. Steve Peregrin Took who was the early percussionist of the band also died, due to asphyxiation on October 27, 1980.
T. Rex have is known to have influenced on a variety of subsequent artists and bands.
