Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about English band, Spandau Ballet.
Enjoy!
Spandau Ballet are an English band that was formed 1979 in London. They were inspired by, and an integral part of, the electro movement, and became one of the most successful bands that emerged during the New Romantic era.
Spandau Ballet consists of Tony Hadley (vocals), Gary Kemp (guitar), Martin Kemp (guitar), John Keeble (drums) and Steve Norman (saxophone).
Our interesting fact of the day is about one of the band's famous and successful songs, the song "True". The lyrics to the song "True" were inspired by a crush that Gary Kemp had on the singer of Altered Images and the star of Gregory's Girl, Clare Grogan.
Gary Kemp met Clare Grogan on the show "Top of The Pops" and even travelled to Scotland, where he had tea with her and her parents. Although Kemp's feelings were unrequited, and the relationship was platonic, it was enough to trigger a song, which became the hit song, "True".
At the height of Spandau Ballet's popularity in 1984, the band received the Brit Award for technical excellence. They have also have been recognised at the Q Awards, and the songwriting of Gary Kemp has been honoured by the Ivor Novello Awards.

The song "Gold" was written by Gary Kemp, guitarist of Spandau Ballet. The song is a spoof of James Bond theme songs, specifically Goldfinger.
Gary used to get his brother Martin to come in when he was writing songs in order to give an opinion, muck about on his bass to see if he was going in the right direction.
Martin loved the song "Gold" from the very start, so at that point, Gary knew that he was on to something.
