Sister Sledge is an American musical vocal group that was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1971. They consisted of sisters Joni, Debbie, Kathy and Kim Sledge, and achieved worldwide success at the height of the disco era. Today, the band consists of Debbie and Kim, as Kathy left the group and Kim passed away.
One of the band's most famous and succesful songs is "We Are Family", which has an interesting story to it, as the sisters recorded the song in one take, but that's not the most interesting fact about this song.
Kathy Sledge, who sang the lead, didn't know the lyrics ahead of time. Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers who wrote and produced the song, gave Kathy each line through her headphones as it came up in order to make it sound spontaneous.
The song "We Are Family" reached the No.2 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was also nominated for a Grammy Award.
