Simply Red are a British pop and soul band that was formed in Manchester in 1983.
Before Simply Red, Mick Hucknall used to sing in a punk band called Frantic Elevators that was inspired by the Sex Pistols. As for the name of the band, Simply Red, it is actually a tribute to Mick Hucknall's favourite football team.
Mick Hucknall was born and raised in Manchester and his favourite football team is Manchester United. Simply Red is a nod to the team's colours. Hucknall loved the team so much, that in 1998, he even tried to purchase the club.
Simply Red scored ten songs on the top 10 in the UK Singles Chart, with the songs "If You Don't Know Me by Now" and "Holding Back the Years" topping the US Billboard Hot 100. Overall, the band has five number one albums in the UK. Their album Stars from 1991 is one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history.
Simply Red was nominated three times for the Grammy Award and to this day have sold more than 55 million album all over the world.

The song "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)" by Simply Red was written and originally recorded in 1982 by The Valentine Brothers, which was the duo of John and Billy Valentine from Columbus, Ohio.
The song is about a guy going through some tough times financially, but he's getting no help from family, friends, or the bank. Many people would love to help him, but they are all in the same position he is.
The Valentine Brothers had been through some financial hardship that helped inspire the lyrics to the song.

Mick Hucknall, lead singer of Simply Red originally recorded the song "Holding Back The Years" in 1979 with his band The Frantic Elevators.
He wrote the song in his bedroom at his father's house when he was still a teenager.
