Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about Scottish rock band, Simple Minds.
Enjoy!
Simple Minds are a Scottish rock band that was formed in 1977 in Glasgow. They are the most commercially successful Scottish band of the 1980s, as the band achieved 5 UK Albums chart number one albums during their career and have sold 60 million albums.
Maybe their most famous song and the one that got them international success is "Don't You (Forget About Me)", and that is our interesting fact of the day.
Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff wrote the song "Don't You (Forget About Me)" specifically for the movie The Breakfast Club by John Hughes. According to Forsey, Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music was actually his first choice to record the song, but Ferry turned it down.
Forsey, who was a big fan of Simple Minds, tried to get them to record the song by delivering the band a cassette demo. Simple Minds were not sure about this idea at first, but then changed their minds and agreed to record the song for the movie and soundtrack.
The band members met with director John Hughes and got to watch a screening of the movie. This helped put the lyrics of the song in better context for the band.
The song got played a lot on the radio, because it was played on various radio stations, including Top 40 and rock stations. The song is still being played these days on classic and modern rock stations and is the most recognizible with Simple Minds.
The core of the band is the two remaining founding members. They are Jim Kerr (vocals and songwriting) and Charlie Burchill (guitars, keyboards, other instruments, songwriting). The other band members at this time are Gordy Goudie (guitar), Ged Grimes (bass), Sarah Brown (vocals), Cherisse Osei (drums) and Catherine AD (vocals, keyboards, guitar).
Simple Minds continue to record new material and tour these days.
