Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about English singer and songwriter, Robbie Williams.
Enjoy!
Robbie Williams (real name: Robert Peter Williams) is an English singer and songwriter. Williams was a member of the English pop group Take That during 1990-1995 and then again during 2009-2012. Williams has also achieved commercial success all over the world as a solo artist.
At age 16, Robbie Williams became the youngest member of the band Take That. It was his mother who encouraged him to try out for the band after seeing an ad in the local newspaper.
Williams performed on hits with Take That, but constantly argued with the band's manager (Nigel Martin-Smith) about his lack of creative input. These arguments led to the beginning of Williams' long battle with alcohol and drugs abuse.
Robbie Williams also had to fight to become a solo artist, since his contract with the band prevented him from releasing any solo material until the Take That dissolved. Eventually, Williams was able to cut his ties with the band in 1996, but had to pay the band $200,000 in lost commission to do so.
Robbie Williams is the best-selling British solo artist in the UK and also the best selling non-Latino artist in Latin America. 6 of his albums are among the top 100 biggest-selling albums in the UK, with 4 albums in the top 60. In 2006, Williams entered the Guinness Book of World Records after selling 1.6 million tickets of his Close Encounters Tour in one day.
Robbie Williams has won a record 18 Brit Awards, winning Best British Male 4 times, and 2 awards for Outstanding Contribution to Music and the 2017 Brits Icon for his "lasting impact on British culture", 12 German ECHO Awards, and 3 MTV European Music Awards. In 2004, he was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame and was voted the "Greatest Artist of the 1990s."
Robbie Williams has been certified for 19.8 million albums and 6.8 million singles in the UK as a solo artist. He is without a doubt one of the best-selling music artists of all time, so far, selling 75 million records all over the world.

Robbie Williams wrote the song "Millennium" with his producer, Guy Chambers, who said that Williams wrote most of the lyrics very fast, but didn't have a title for the song. Eventually, Williams came up with a name and title for the song, and that title was "Millennium."
The music for the song is based on Nancy Sinatra's "You Only Live Twice" from the James Bond film of the same name.
