Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about English rock band, Pulp.
Enjoy!
Pulp were an English rock band that were formed in 1978 in Sheffield. The best-known line-up of the band during the years they were most known, famous and successful (1994–1996) consisted of Jarvis Cocker (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Russell Senior (guitar, violin), Candida Doyle (keyboards), Steve Mackey (bass), Mark Webber (guitar, keyboards) and Nick Banks (drums, percussion).
What you may not know, is that it took Pulp a very long time (over 15 years) to really break through and become successful as a band. Pulp has gone through many lineup changes ever since they started as a university project from lead singer, Jarvis Cocker in 1978. However, the band hit huge commercial success only in the early to mid 1990s.
The sudden rise to fame hit the band hard, as Russell Senior who was the guitarist and lead creative songwriter of the band decided to leave in 1996 and Cocker who developed problems with cocaine addiction and disillusionment with the music industry.
Some of the band's most known and successful songs are "Common People" and "Sorted for E's & Wizz".
The song "Common People" by Pulp is based on a girl that lead singer of the band, Jarvis Cocker, met at St. Martin's on the sculpture course.
Jarvis said that nothing actually ever happened with this girl and that in fact, he just overheard her say that she would like to live in the East End of London.
Some say that the song "Common People" reflects Jarvis' thoughts, as he does not come from a working class background.
