Pearl Jam is an American rock band that was formed in 1990 in Seattle, Washington, in 1990 and consists of Eddie Vedder (lead vocals), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), Mike McCready (lead guitar), Jeff Ament (bass) and Matt Cameron (drums).
Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream with their 1991 debut album, Ten. They are considered to be one of the key bands in the movement of grunge music and over the course of the their music career, members of the band became noted because of their refusal to adhere to traditional music industry practices and even refusing to give interviews or make proper music videos.
Early in the band's career, lead singer Eddie Vedder would often climb lighting rigs, camera mounts and basically anything that was high and dangerous enough, so he could then leap into the crowd.
He had no fear, yet the other band members were worried that would lose another lead singer, after the death of Mother Love Bone lead singer to heroin overdose.
Eddie Vedder said that he wouldn't feel a thing during the show, but would often wake up with bruises and scratches from his antics.
Pearl Jam has sold approximately 32 million records in the US to this day and an estimated 60 million records all over the world. They also outlasted and outsold many other bands and groups from the alternative rock breakthrough of the early 1990s, and today are considered one of the most influential bands of that decade.
In 2017, Pearl Jam were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the band's first year of eligibility.

The song "Alive" by Pearl Jam is about a boy who finds out his father is actually his stepfather, and that his real father is dead.
Lead singer Eddie Vedder later revealed that the song was a work of fiction based on reality, and that the chorus of the song "I'm still alive" was what he considered his curse, as he found himself struggling to deal with the strained relationship with his stepfather, and the fact that his real father was dead.
Vedder's mother divorced his father when he was only one year old, and he was raised by his stepfather without knowing it. Eddie even met his real father without realizing that the person he met was his actual father. However, Vedder's real father later died of multiple sclerosis in 1981, before Eddie could see him again.
