Norah Jones (real name: Geethali Norah Jones Shankar) is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist, who considers herself a fan of "old music", citing Billie Holliday, Bill Evans, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. According to Jones, this type of music is just so badass and original.
Norah Jones made her mark with her voice and a piano, but she actually began her musical career in junior high with the alto saxophone. On the night of her 21st birthday, she was heard by music industry accountant Shell White, who got her demo to the president of Blue Note Records, the famous jazz record label. Soon afterwards, Norah Jones was signed.
In 2002, Jones launched her solo music career when she released Come Away with Me, a fusion of jazz with country music and pop. The album was certified Diamond and sold more than 27 million copies.
In 2003, Norah Jones won five Grammy Awards for this album, including the Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist. Overall, she has won 9 Grammy Awards.
Billboard magazine named Jones the top jazz artist of the 2000–2009 decade, and she is ranked 60th on Billboard magazine's artists of the 2000–2009 decade chart.
To this day, Norah Jones has sold over 50 million records all over the world.
