Moby (real name: Richard Melville Hall) is an American singer, musician songwriter, record producer, DJ and photographer. He is known all over the world mostly for his electronic music, but also for being a vegan and his great support of animal rights.
Moby gained attention during the early 1990s when his early work included experimentes in techno and breakbeat hardcore. When he released his fifth studio album in 1999, Play, Moby achieved worldwide success.
But, things weren't always bright for Moby. When he couldn't get his songs on the radio early on, Moby started licensing them for commercials in order to get them exposure. It was the album mentioned above (Play) that was the first which all of its songs were used in commercials and the ads gave the album a huge boost in sales.
Another interesting part to know about Moby, is that he is the great-great-great-grandnewphew of Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick. That is how he chose the name Moby.
Apart from being a successful musician, Moby has also co-written, produced, and remixed music for acts and musicians like: Daft Punk, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Mylène Farmer, Brian Eno, David Bowie, Britney Spears, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Public Enemy, Soundgarden and others.
Moby has sold more than 20 million records all over the world and AllMusic considers him as "one of the most important dance music figures of the early 1990s.
