Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about British rock band, Marillion.
Enjoy!
Marillion are a British rock band that was formed in 1979 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. The band emerged from the post-punk music scene in Britain and existed as a bridge between the styles of punk rock and classic progressive rock. They became the most commercially successful neo-progressive rock band of the 1980s.
One of Marillion's most known and successful songs is "Kayleigh", which was written by Fish, lead singer of the band. The song "Kayleigh" is about Fish's former girlfriend named Kay and their painful breakup.
Kay's middle name was Lee, so Fish decided to alter the name slightly for the song. When the song was released, British tabloid journalists went on a quest to ascertain the identity of Kayleigh.
This resulting publicity helped send the song to the No.2 spot on the UK charts and also push the album to the top of the charts. This song was also Marillion's only chart entry in America.
Marillion are ranked in the 38th spot on the list of Classic Rock's "50 Best Live Acts of All Time", as of 2008. It is estimated that the band have sold more than 15 million albums all over the world.
