Mariah Carey is an American singer and songwriter. When she was high school, Mariah was already busy juggling her fledgling professional singing career, doing studio work as well as back up singing gigs.
All this work resulted in Mariah Carey frequently missing school. Her friends and classmates grew so accustomed to her being absent, that they began to refer to her by the nickname "Mirage".
Another interesting fact to know is that Mariah's mother, Patricia, is an opera singer, and she is the one who taught Mariah how to sing. Mariah also sings in a 5-octave range and she also masters the whistle register. Mariah Carey made the Guiness Book of World Records for the highest whistle register in history.
Billboard magazine named Mariah Carey the most successful artist of the 1990s in the US, and World Music Awards honored Carey with the award and honor of the world's best-selling recording artist of the 1990s. On May 10, 2000, Mariah Carey received the 'Artist of the Millenium' award.
Throughout her music career, Mariah Carey has sold over 200 million records all over the world, which makes her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. According to the RIAA, Carey is the third-best-selling female artist in the US, with 63.5 million certified albums.
Mariah Carey has won various awards during her career, among them are 5 Grammy Awards, 10 American Music Awards, 14 Billboard Music Awards and 19 World Music Awards.
