Leonard Cohen was a Canadian singer, songwriter, novelist and poet. In his work, he explored religion, isolation, politics, personal relationships and sexuality.
Cohen pursued a career as a novelist and a poet during the 1950s and early 1960s. It's only in 1967, that he began his music career when he was 33 years old.
One of Cohen's famous songs is 'Hallelujah' that was released on his 1984 studio album Various Positions. The song had limited initial success, but later found greater popularity through a 1991 cover that was made by John Cale. This also formed the basis for a later cover that was made by Jeff Buckley. The song 'Hallelujah' has been performed by almost 200 artists in different languages.
In 2008, Leonard Cohen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
He was a Companion of the Order of Canada, which is the Canada's highest honour for a civilian. In 2011, Leonrad Cohen received one of the Prince of Asturias Awards for literature and the ninth Glenn Gould Prize.
Leonard Cohen died at his home in Los Angeles from leukemia on November 7, 2016. He was 82 years old.
