Leona Lewis is a British singer, songwriter and actress who attended the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology and national recognition when she won the third series of The X Factor in 2006. With this win, she received a £1 million recording contract with the record label of Simon Cowell, Syco Music.
Leona Lewis originally trained as an opera singer, then moved into jazz and blues, and then at the end settled into pop music.
Her debut album, Spirit, was released in 2007 and went straight to the top of the Billboard 200, outselling her nearest rival four to one. Lewis was the first British artist that reached the top of the US album chart with a debut LP. The album went 10× platinum in the UK and became the fourth best selling album of the 2000s. The lead single on the album, "Bleeding Love", spent 7 weeks at the top of the chart.
Leona Lewis has won 2 MOBO Awards, 1 MTV Europe Music Award, and 2 World Music Awards. She was also nominated 6 times for the Brit Awards and 3 times for the Grammy Award. She is known for her expansive four octave vocal range, power, technical control and, in particular, her frequent use of the falsetto register.
Starting her music career in 2006, Lewis is the second best-selling act from The X Factor franchise, only behind One Direction. She has sold more than 20 million records all over the world.
