Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about English rock band, Led Zeppelin.
Enjoy!
Led Zeppelin were an English rock band that were formed in 1968 in London, England. The band consisted of Jimmy Page (guitar), Robert Plant (volcals), John Paul Jones (bass and keyboard) and John Bonham (drums).
They were considered as one of the progenitors of heavy metal, due to their heavy, guitar-driven sound, and their music and playing style drew from a wide variety of influences, including folk music, blues and psychedelia.
Led Zeppelin got their first recording contract based on the recommendation of Dusty Springfield. Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones had both played on some of her albums, and have made a good impression.
Led Zeppelin are widely considered as one of the most successful, innovative, and influential rock band in the history of music. Even that they are not active since 1980, they are one of the best-selling music artists in the history of audio recording. Different sources estimate that the band sold between 200-300 million units worldwide.
Yet, with all their glory, influence and success, Led Zeppelin never won a Grammy Award while they were still active. But, in 2005, the band was given a lifetime achievement award, and rightfully so.
Led Zeppelin were so influential, that the museum's biography of the band states they were "as influential" during the 1970s as the Beatles were during the 1960s.
In 1995, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Led Zeppelin's most famous rock song of all time, "Stairway to Heaven" wasn't a chart it, because the song was never released as a single to the general public. Radio stations received promotional singles which quickly became collector's items.
The lyrics of the song take some pretty wild turns, but the beginning of the song is about a woman who accumulates money, only to find out the hard way that her life had no meaning and will not get her into heaven.

The song "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin was written by Robert Plant in 1973 while driving through the Sahara desert on the way to the National Festival of Folklore in Morocco. However, Kashmir is in Southern Asia, and Robert Plant was of course nowhere near it.
Robert Plant explained that Kashmir came from a trip that he and Jimmy Page made down the Moroccan Atlantic coast, from Agadir down to Sidi Ifni.
The original title of the song was actually "Driving to Kashmir" and all the band members agreed that this song was one of their best musical achievements.

The song "Going to California" by Led Zeppelin was written by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, as the two draw inspiration from Joni Mitchell and specifically her song "California."
The song "Going to California" is an acoustic song without drums, so drummer John Bonham sat this one out. Jimmy Page played two different guitars on the song (a 12-string and a 6-string) and John Paul Jones played mandolin.
