Janis Joplin was an American rock singer and songwriter. She is considered as one of the most successful and widely-known female rock stars of her era.

Janis Joplin rose to fame in 1967, during an appearance at Monterey Pop Festival. She was then the lead singer of the then little-known psychedelic rock band from San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company. 

After she released two albums with the band, she decided to leave the band, and continue as a solo artist with her own backing groups, first the Kozmic Blues Band and later the Full Tilt Boogie Band.

Joplin performed at the Woodstock festival as well as the FestivalExpress train tour. Five of Joplin's singles went into the Billboard Hot 100.

The interesting fact of the day about Janis Joplin, talks about her personal life. It is said, that she has clocked Jim Morrison in the head with a bottle of Jim Beam, but she could have easily put him in his place with her bare hands.

Janis had a black belt in karate, as she was schooled in the ancient art of karate, so, she didn't need the Jim Beam in order to take Morrison out if she wanted to. Besides her black belt in karate, Joplin also majored in Anthropology.

Joplin released three albums, with the fourth album, Pearl, released in January 1971, three months after she died. Pearl topped the Billboard charts.

she died of a heroin overdose at the age of 27. She was found dead in room 105 of the Landmark Hotel in Los Angeles.
