Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about English heavy metal band, Iron Maiden.
Enjoy!
Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band that was formed in 1975 in Leyton, East London. They are Pioneers of the new wave of British heavy metal, and achieved initial success during the early 1980s.
Our interesting fact of the day is about Iron Maiden's well known mascot, Eddie the head. At the beginning, Eddie the head was just a head at the back of the stage. Blood capsules were fed through the mouth, invariably soaking the drummer with fake blood.
Artist Derek Riggs based the first drawing of Eddie the head for Iron Maiden's debut album, on an image he saw of a decapitated head on a Vietnamese tank.
Even though Iron Maiden received little radio or television support, they are considered one of the most successful heavy metal bands in history. The band have sold more than 100 million copies of their albums all over the world and won the Ivor Novello Award for international achievement in 2002.
As of October 2013, the band have played over 2000 live shows throughout their music career, and as mention before, Eddie, the band's mascot have been supporting Iron Maiden for over 35 years. Eddie has appeared on almost all of the band's album and single covers, as well as in their live concerts and shows.
Iron Maiden has released 38 albums, including 16 studio albums, 12 live albums, 4 EPs, and 7 compilations.

In new year's eve of 1978, Iron Maiden recorded "Prowler," "Strange World," "Invasion" and "Iron Maiden." It cost them £200, which basically exhausted their resources and prevented the band from actually buying the master tape.
Two weeks later, when the band got hold of of the tape, they found that the music was unmixed and raw, because the master copy had been wiped. They decided to give this rough copy to DJ Neal Kay, who played it at The Soundhouse and it got great reaction and much love.
So, Iron Maiden started playing gigs there and the demo tape somehow got to Rod Smallwood, who later became Iron Maiden's manager.

According to Iron Maiden bassist, Steve Harris, the band's song The Clairvoyant was inspired by the death of Doris Stokes who was a psychic.
Harris said, that if Stokes was really clairvoyant and was really able to see the future, then she should have been able to for see her own death.
The song The Clairvoyant was the first one written for Iron Maiden's 1988 album, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.
