Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about American rock band, Grateful Dead.
Enjoy!
Grateful Dead was an American rock band that was formed in Palo Alto, California in 1965. Their music style Ranged from quintet to septet, and they were known for their eclectic and unique style. Their music mixed and used elements of rock, country, folk, blues, bluegrass, gospel, reggae, modal jazz, experimental music, space rock and psychedelia.
An interesting fact about Grateful Dead is that it was unlikely they would exist at all, and it was almost a miracle that the band came together. If you look at the background of the band members, you'll find out how different the band members were from each other, both in terms of their musical backgrounds and their personalities.
Jerry Garcia came from a folk/bluegrass background, Phil Lesh didn't like rock 'n' roll, Bob Weir was kind of a preppy kid into folk music, and Bill Kreutzmann was a jazz drummer. Some of the band members hadn't played electric instruments until they were The Warlocks, and yet it worked out for the band for 30 years!
Rolling Stone magazine ranks the Grateful Dead on the 57th spot on their issue of The Greatest Artists of All Time. In 1994, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, and in 2012, a recording of their performance at Cornell University's Barton Hall from May 8, 1977 was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.
Overall, The Grateful Dead have sold over 35 million albums all over the world.
