Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about English rock band, Genesis.
Enjoy!
Genesis were an English rock band that was formed in 1967 at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey.
When the band formed, they consisted of Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Chris Stewart and Mike Rutherford. The line up of the band changed in 1968-1969 when Chris Stewart left the band and John Silver joined.
A year later, another changed happened in the band when Silver left and John Mayhew joined and in 1970, Phil Collins joined as the band's drummer.
The changes continued in the band, but The most commercially successful and longest-lasting line-up of Genesis, consisted of Tony Banks (keyboards), Mike Rutherford (bass and guitar) and Phil Collins (lead vocals and drums).
With all the changes of Genesis, it wasn't only the band members that changed, but also their musical style, as they started with folk music and later continued to progressive rock in the 1970s. At the end, Genesis took abother musical direction and moved towards pop at the end of the decade.
Our interesting fact of the day comes from their early 1970s years. Mike Rutherford couldn't play bass and guitar simultaneously during the band's live performances, so he decided to split duties with Daryl Stuermer while they were on tour.
Mike Rutherford would play the bass on the band's older tracks, and Daryl Stuermer would replace Steve Hackett on guitar. On the newer tracks, which were recorded with Rutherford on guitar, Rutherford would play guitar, while Stuermer would switch to bass.
Genesis have released 15 studio albums and 6 live albums, with 6 of them topping the UK chart. They have won numerous awards and nominations, including a Grammy Award for Best Concept Music Video with "Land of Confusion".
Genesis had also inspired several tribute bands, and In 2010, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Genesis have sold 21.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the US and between 100-150 million albums all over the world.

The song "Land of Confusion" by Genesis is a rare political song, that questions the wisdom of world leaders at a time when Russia and the US were enemies and there was a threat of nuclear war.
Phil Collins called it "A political song about the mess we have landed in." Mike Rutherford called this "A kind of '80s protest song."

Genesis wrote the song "I Can't Dance" in the studio in only one session. Once they started, they just kept going until they finished the song.
The lyrics of the song are made up of bits that Phil Collins improvised in the studio. When they started working out on the song, they decided to just write spontaneously in order to keep from over-thinking it.
The song is actually a send-up of male models. It's not about being unable to dance, it's about guys that look good, but can't string a sentence together.
