Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about British-American rock band, Fleetwood Mac.
Enjoy!
Fleetwood Mac is a British-American rock band, that was formed in 1967 in formed in London, England.
Fleetwood Mac was founded by Peter Green (guitar), Jeremy Spencer (guitar) and Mick Fleetwood (drums). They were short of a permanent bass guitarist for the first few months, but then Peter Green convinced John McVie to join the band, thus establishing the first stable line-up just in time to record the band's self-titled debut album.
The band went through various changes over the years and the later line-up (and maybe more known) included Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, until the band started to change again with the departure of Buckingham and then Nicks in 1991.
The band (still active and touring) had many successful songs during the 1970s and 1980s, with one of them is the song "The Chain", and that is our interesting fact of the day.
The song "The Chain" was written by Stevie Nicks and it is about Lindsey Buckingham, as the relationship of Nicks and Buckingham started to fall apart. This song also represents the resilience of Fleetwood Mac and the strength of their bond, continuing on for many years, despite the band members professional and personal difficulties. Most of the time, "The Chain" was the first song the band played during concerts.
Both Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham share lead vocals on the song. It is also the only Fleetwood Mac song that is credited to all five members of the 1977 lineup. Because different pieces were assembled in order to make this song, all five band members contributed to the success of the song.
Fleetwood Mac has sold over 100 million records all over the world, which makes the band one of the world's best-selling bands. In 1998, select members of Fleetwood Mac were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and also received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.
In 2018, the band was declared MusiCares Person of the Year.

The song "Sara" by Fleetwood Mac is a very personal song for Stevie Nicks. The song is about a combination of things that were going on in her life, including her friend Sara Recor, the band, her relationship with Mick Fleetwood, and the abortion of her child with Don Henley.
Stevie Nicks considers "Sara" to be her alter-ego and her muse, the "poet in her heart." "Sara" was the name that she gave to her child before she had an abortion.
The song "Sara" reached the No.7 spot on the US chart and the No.37 spot on the UK chart.
