Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about British band, Fine Young Cannibals.
Enjoy!
Fine Young Cannibals were a British band that was formed in 1984 ub Birmingham, England. The band consisted of Roland Gift (vocals), Andy Cox (guitar) and David Steele (bass).
Their self-titled debut album from 1985, contained the successful singles "Johnny Come Home" and "Suspicious Minds", a cover to Elvis Presley's song from 1969. The two songs entered the top 40 hit list in Canada, Australia, the UK and many other European countries.
David Steele said that Elvis Presley appeared to him in a dream, told him to record the song, and promised that it would be a hit. It seems that Elvis knew what he was talking about, as this cover by Fine Young Cannibals peaked at #8 on the UK charts.
In 1990, Fine Young Cannibals won two Brit Awards for Best British Group, and for Best British Album for their 1988 album, The Raw & the Cooked.
The song "Johnny Come Home" was the Fine Young Cannibals' first single from their debut album. The song follows the story of a runaway who learns the harsh reality of life on the streets.
The title refers to his parents' desperate plea for him to come home and was likely inspired by the 1975 TV documentary about London runaways, Johnny Go Home: The Murder of Billy Two-Tone.
