Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about English musical duo, Everything but the Girl.
Enjoy!
Everything but the Girl was an English musical duo that was formed in 1982 in Hull. The band consisted of Tracey Thorn (lead singer) and Ben Watt (guitar, keyboard, vocals).
The two were students at the university of Hull when they met. Tracey was a singer in the pop duo Marine Girls and Ben contributed a photograph to the cover of their LP. They formed Everything but the Girl and shortly after also got married. The name Everything but The Girl was inspired by an advertising slogan of Turner's Furniture, which was a popular store in Hull near the university.
The career of the duo almost ended when Ben Watt contracted Churg-Strauss syndrome, an autoimmune disease which can even lead to death. He ultimately recovered and the prospect of his death contributed to the lyrics of the band's most successful song, "Missing", which reached the No.2 spot on the US charts and the No.3 spot on the UK chart.
Everything but the Girl is currently inactive, but Tracey Thorn hinted that the two may perform again someday. Even with that statement, they haven't performed in public since the year 2000.
