Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about English synthpop duo, Erasure.

Enjoy!

Erasure are an English synthpop duo, consisting of Andy Bell (singer and songwriter) and Vince Clarke (keyboards and songwriter). They formed in 1985 in London and their debut single was "Who Needs Love Like That".

Erasure achieved 24 consecutive Top 40 hits in the UK, and three Top 20 hits in the US, with the songs: "A Little Respect", "Always" and "Chains of Love".

Now, you may be wondering how the two have decided to name themselves Erasure, and that's our interesting fact of the day. You see, everytime Andy Bell and Vince Clarke tried to come up with a name to their band, they wrote it in pencil, but kept erasing it from the paper.

At one of these times, the eraser fell off the pencil, and they decided to call themselves Pencil Without An Eraser. Eventually, they changed the name to Erasure.

By the year 2009, 34 of the band's 37 chart-eligible singles and EPs entered the UK Top 40, 17 of them reaching the Top 10. Erasure also won the Brit Award for Best British Group at the 1989 Brit Awards.

Erasure have penned more than 200 songs and have sold over 25 million albums all over the world.

The song "A Little Respect" by Erasure is a plea for reconciliation from a lover who has been hurt, and in this song, Andy Bell really shows his ability to pour his heart out in his lyrics, something Vince Clarke struggles with.

"A Little Respect" is known for the very high note that singer Andy Bell hits toward the end of the song, which gives us all an idea of why Vince Clarke chose Bell to be part of Erasure, from a long queue of applicants, after he placed an ad in Melody Maker, looking for a vocalist.
