Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about English rock band, Electric Light Orchestra.
Enjoy!
Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) are an English rock band that was formed in 1970 in Birmingham, by Jeff Lynne (songwriter, multi-instruments), Roy Wood (songwriter, multi-instruments) and Bev Bevan (drums).
The music of ELO combined a mix of classical arrangements, Beatlesque pop, and futuristic iconography. ELO was formed because the band members wanted to create a new band with a string section along with traditional instruments.
They decided to choose the name Electric Light Orchestra because their music combined electric rock instruments with orchestral instruments. "Light Orchestras" were small orchestras popular in England in the '60s.
During their music career, ELO have sold more than 50 million records all over the world and earned 19 CRIA, 21 RIAA, and 38 BPI awards.
During the years 1972 to 1986, the band had 20 Top 20 songs on the UK Singles Chart, and 15 Top 20 songs on the US Billboard Hot 100. In 2017, the band's line-up that consisted of Lynne, Wood, Tandy and Bevan were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
