Donna Summer (real name: LaDonna Adrian Gaines) was an American singer, songwriter and painter as well. She rose to fame in the late 1970s during the disco.
When Donna Summer was 20 years old, she began to audition as a Broadway performer. She scored her first role in the musical 'Hair' that was performing in Germany.
Summer also performed in 'Show Boat' and 'Godspell' while she was in Germany and even learned the German language. Her breakthrough album was Once Upon A Time which was released in 1977. The songs on the album were arranged as a concept and told a story similar to Cinderella.
During her music career, Donna Summer has won 5 Grammy Awards and was also the first artist that had 3 consecutive double albums top the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. She also charted four No.1 singles in the U.S. within a 12-month period.
Donna Summer has reportedly sold more than 100 million records all over the world, which makes Summer one of the world's best-selling artists of all time.
On May 17, 2012, Donna Summer died from lung cancer, at her home in Naples, Florida.
