Shquille O'Neal was an NBA All-Star and a great player which was very difficult to guard, yet he had one clear disadvantage as a player and that was his free throws abilities. You would expect that throwing from the line should be quite easy since no one is guarding you and you have your time to concentrate and make the easy basket, but in fact that was one field O'Neal hated the most and the stats of his NBA career clearly show that.
O'Neal was such a terrible free throw shooter that many teams applied the "Hack-a-Shaq" strategy which meant fouling him on purpose in order to send him to the free throw line, making him miss shots and thus keep the game close and not allow him easy baskets near the rim since he was so big and strong in the paint area.
When Shaquille O'Neal retired back in 2010, the stats showed that he missed a total of 5,317 free throws over the course of his NBA career. Nevertheless, he remains and will always be considered as a great and dominant player, not to mention a very interesting and funny character.
