Cher (real name: Cherilyn Sarkisian) is an American singer and actress, who is referred by many as the Goddess of Pop. Cher is known for her distinctive contralto singing voice but also for adopting a different styles and appearances during her career.
Cher began working as a session singer in order to finance an acting career she was dreaming about. Sonny Bono, her future husband, introduced her to record producer, Phil Spector, who then hired her as a backing vocalist.
After Cher released two singles under the name Caesar and Cleo, Sonny Bono and Cher gained stardom as Sonny and Cher. Throughout this period, Cher had also a solo career, initially singing a paean to Ringo Starr under the pseudonym Bonnie Jo Mason. Thereafter, Cher secured several hits, including a cover version of the song "All I Really Want To Do" by The Byrds.
Cher has won many awards troughout her music and acting career. Among these awards are a Grammy Award, an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, a Cannes Film Festival Award, three Golden Globe Awards, a Kennedy Center Honors prize, a special CFDA Fashion Award and more.
To date, Cher has sold approximately 100 million records all over the world, which makes her one of the best-selling music artists in history. She is also the only artist that had a No.1 single on a Billboard chart on every decade from the 1960s to the 2010s.
