Yusuf Islam, who was born Steven Demetre Georgiou and is commonly known by his former stage name Cat Stevens, is a British singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
He got his stage name from his girlfriend at the time, Christine, when one day she told him that he looks so much like a cat and that kind of stuck. At the same time, films like Cat Ballou and What's New Pussycat? were around, so it just stuck and Stevens decided to keep his first name and tag cat on to it. The end result was his stage name - Cat Stevens.
Stevens had released successful hits and albums during his music career which is on. His debut album reached the top 10 in the UK, and the song "Matthew and Son" from the album charted at No.2 on the UK Singles Chart and the albums albums Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat were both certified triple platinum in the U.S.
In 1977, Cat Stevens decided to convert to Islam, and he adopted the name Yusuf Islam in 1978. In 1979, he auctioned all of his guitars for charity and left the music world and devoted himself to educational and philanthropic causes in the Muslim community.
In 2006, Stevens returned to pop music and released An Other Cup, his first album of new pop songs in 28 years.
In 2014, Cat Stevens was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
