Bruce Hornsby is an American singer and pianist that draws his music classic music, jazz, folk, bluegrass, gospel, Motown, blues, jam band and rock.
In 1984, Hornsby formed the group Bruce Hornsby and the Range, and they were signed to RCA Records in 1985, and in 1986, they had the successful single "The Way It Is" that topped the US charts.
The song "The Way It Is" is a very unusual hit, as it lacks a big chorus, shifts in momentum, catchy hooks and most other elements you can find on typical chart-toppers. With a consistent tempo and a jazz inflected sound, the song appealed to a more adult audience and added a welcome diversity to Top 40 playlists that were dominated at the time by uptempo, synth-driven songs.
The song "The Way It Is" was loved by grown-ups and their kids could also tolerate. It reached both the top of the Hot 100 and adult contemporary charts.
"The Way It Is" deals with the civil rights movement in the US, and the lyrics in this song deal with the need to resist complacency and never resign yourself to racial injustice as the status quo.
Bruce Hornsby has won the Grammy Award 3 times: Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1987 with Bruce Hornsby and the Range, Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album in 1990, and a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 1994.
Bruce Hornsby has achieved recognition for his solo albums and performances, and has also collaborated with Grateful Dead. He was even a member of the group between September 1990 to March 1992, and has played more than 100 shows during that period of time.
