Preston achieved great success as a solo artist, releasing hit singles such as "Outa-Space", "That's the Way God Planned It", "Will It Go Round in Circles", "With You I'm Born Again", Space Race" and "Nothing from Nothing".
Billy Preston started writing the song "Nothing from Nothing" one night in the dressing room of an Atlanta nightclub where he was performing. He wanted to write a song based on the saying, "nothing from nothing leaves nothing."
Preston performed this song on the very first episode of Saturday Night Live, and the song topped the US chart. The b-side of the single was another song that preston wrote along with Bruce Fisher, "You Are So Beautiful," which later became a huge hit for Joe Cocker.
