Billy Ocean (real name: Leslie Sebastian Charles) is a Trinidadian-English singer and recording artist. Ocean scored many international pop hits during the 1970s and 1980s, and was the most popular British R&B singer and songwriter of the early to mid-1980s.
One of Ocean's most popular and successful songs is 'When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going' and is featured in the soundtrack of the movie The Jewel of the Nile.
Movie stars Michael Douglas, Danny Devito and Kathleen Turner sang backup, but because they were not members of the musicians union, Billy Ocean's video was banned in the UK. However, this did not stop from the song becoming Ocean's only No.1 UK hit. The song also reached the No.2 spot on the US chart.
Billy Ocean won the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for his worldwide hit 'Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)' and was also nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male Artist in 1987.
In 2002, Billy Ocean was awarded an honorary doctorate of music by the University of Westminster, London. In 2010, he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MOBO Awards, and in 2011, Billy Ocean became a Companion of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. He is also a member of the Rastafari movement.
