Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about American hip hop group, Beastie Boys.
Enjoy!
The Beastie Boys were an American hip hop group that were formed in 1979 in New York City. The group was composed of Michael "Mike D" Diamond (vocals, drums), Adam "MCA" Yauch (vocals, bass) and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz (vocals, guitar).
Early on, they were actually a hardcore band, but the rapping soon became the focus of their shows. The Beastie Boys used to open shows for Madonna in 1985 and Run DMC in 1986. However, their sets did not go over well with the fans of Madonna, but she still decided to keep them on the bill anyway.
The Beastie Boys have never allowed their music to be used in commercials, and are unlikely to ever do so, as Adam Yauch stated in his will that he would like all future requests to be denied.
On May 4, 2012, Adam Yauch died from cancer at the age of 47, and the surviving two members of the group announced in June 2014 that they were discontinuing the band, following Adam Yauch's death.
The Beastie Boys have sold 26 million records in the US and 50 million records all over the world, which makes them the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991. They also have seven platinum-selling albums from 1986 to 2004, making the group one of the longest-lived hip hop acts worldwide.
In 2012, the Beastie Boys became the third rap group that were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
