Michael Oldfield is an English multi-instrumentalist and composer, which work blends elements of progressive rock with folk, world, electronic, classical, new-age and ambient music.

Oldfield's biggest commercial success was in 1973 with his album Tubular Bells, that became a hit in America after its opening was used as the theme for the film The Exorcist. Oldfield also recorded the 1983 hit single "Moonlight Shadow" and a rendition of the Christmas piece "In Dulci Jubilo".

The song "Moonlight Shadow" is widely regarded to be a tribute to John Lennon, who was murdered prior to Mike Oldfield writing the song. Oldfield said that the song was actually inspired by the Tony Curtis movie Houdini.

The meaning of the line "caught in the middle of a hundred and five" caused confusion for many years. In 1995, Oldfield explained that it was 105 people, signifying a large amount of people, and also because five rhymed with the next line.

Michael Oldfield has released over 20 albums with his last album being released in 2017, a sequel to his 1975 album Ommadawn, titled Return to Ommadawn.
